Do Oxford and Cambridge Require Admissions Tests?

For 2027 entry both universities moved to shared tests: ESAT for engineering and physical sciences, TMUA for maths, computer science and (at Cambridge) economics, LNAT for law and UCAT for medicine. Oxford also uses the new TARA reasoning test for some other courses, and Cambridge uses STEP in some mathematics offers. A few courses use written work or no test. Tests are sat in October 2026, and booking for most closed in September.

ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test): multiple-choice papers in maths and sciences, run by UAT-UK.
TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission): two 75-minute multiple-choice papers, no calculator, scored 1.0–9.0.
TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions): a newer UAT-UK reasoning test used by Oxford for some non-science courses.
LNAT: 42 multiple-choice questions and an essay, testing reasoning rather than legal knowledge.

The January 2027 ESAT/TMUA sitting is not open to standard Oxford or Cambridge applicants.

Because the tests are designed for very strong applicants, many candidates find them hard, and nobody is expected to get everything right. Practising with official past papers under timed conditions is the most reliable preparation.
