How Long Should a College Essay Be?

These are the limits for the 2026–27 application cycle (for entry in autumn 2027). Colleges can change their own supplement limits every year, so check the prompt inside the application portal before you start drafting.

The Common App personal essay has a minimum of 250 words and a maximum of 650. The text box will not accept more than 650 words, so there is no way to go "slightly over".

Admissions readers do not reward length for its own sake, but most successful personal essays use most of the space, roughly 550–650 words. That is enough room for one or two specific moments, what you did, and what it shows about how you think, without a slow introduction.

If your draft is 400 words and feels finished, ask whether a reader learns something about you that is not already in your activities list or grades. If not, the essay is short on substance, not words. If your draft is 900 words, cut scene-setting, repeated points and summary conclusions first, and keep the concrete details.

Paste your final version into the Common App a few days before the deadline to confirm the count and check that formatting such as paragraph breaks has survived.

From 2026 entry onwards, the UCAS personal statement is no longer one free-form essay. You answer three questions in separate boxes:

Question 1: Why do you want to study this course or subject?

Question 2: How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

Question 3: What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

The overall limit is 4,000 characters including spaces, roughly 600–700 words, and each answer must be at least 350 characters. UCAS does not set a split. A sensible starting point is about 40% for question 1, 40% for question 2 and 20% for question 3, unless work experience or activities are central to your course.

UCAS counts characters, not words, and spaces and punctuation count. Draft in a document with a character counter, leave a small margin, then paste into UCAS Hub to confirm.

Supplemental essays are set by each college. Common formats are a "Why this college?" essay (often 150–400 words), a "Why this major?" essay, and short answers of 50–150 words. Some highly selective colleges ask for several short responses rather than one long one.

Treat the limit as a signal of how much detail the college wants. For a 100-word answer, one specific example is enough. For a 400-word "Why us?" essay, name particular courses, programmes or opportunities and connect them to what you have already done.

Supplement prompts change every year, so confirm the current prompts and limits inside the Common App or the college portal before you draft.

For master's and PhD applications, the statement of purpose (SOP) length is set by each university and sometimes by each department. Typical instructions are 500–1,000 words or one to two pages. If no limit is given, around 800–1,000 words is a safe target for most taught master's courses.

Scholarship essays follow the funder rules exactly. Many use 250–1,000 words, and some use character limits inside an online form. Scholarship panels read a large number of essays, so a tight, specific essay under the limit reads better than a padded one at the limit.

Indian students applying to both US colleges and UK universities often reuse material. That works for ideas but not for text: a 650-word Common App story will not fit the three-question UCAS format without restructuring.

Over the limit: remove an opening "hook" paragraph if the essay still works without it, delete sentences that repeat your activities list, replace general claims such as "I am passionate about" with one concrete detail, and cut filler phrases.

Under the limit: add the reflection most drafts are missing, meaning what you learned, how your thinking changed and what you did next. Add a specific detail (a number, a name, a moment) rather than more adjectives.

Portals take pasted text, so pages rarely matter for the Common App or UCAS. They matter when an SOP or scholarship asks for "one page" or "two pages". These are rough conversions for 12-point text; your own font and margins will shift them.

A workable split for a 650-word personal essay is about 100 words for the opening moment, about 350 for what happened and what you did, and 150–200 for what it shows about you and what you do next. If the essay is not working, the reflection is usually the part that is too short.

For a 1,000-word SOP, spend roughly a third on your academic or work background, a third on why this programme and this university, and a third on what you plan to do afterwards. Cut the part you could paste into any other application.

Use the portal counter for the final check. Word processors and application forms can disagree by a few words, especially on hyphenated words and contractions, so paste your essay into the form early and leave a small margin.

If an application does not say whether a title or heading counts, assume it does and leave room. For UCAS, the count is characters including spaces, so a draft that looks short in words can still be over.
